NEW DELHI: The families of the victims of the Goa Romeo Lane nightclub fire, which killed 25 persons, held a protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Sunday, demanding the death sentence for the owners of the club where the tragedy occurred, reported news agency PTI.
Raising slogans such as “hang the killers”, the protesters named brothers Saurabh Luthra and Gaurav Luthra, holding them responsible for the blaze that claimed 25 lives.
The families said that justice must be delivered on a war footing for those who died and those who were injured in the incident. One of the protesters who spoke to the media said the horrendous death of 25 people could have been avoided if the Luthras and their partners had to adhere and maintain basic fire fighting and safety norms in the club.
The protestors claimed the Luthras didn’t care about human lives, only tried to maximize profits and fill their pockets. “Not even basic fire-fighting equipment was present in the club,” one of the protestors said.
The fire broke out on December 6, last year, at Birch by Romeo Lane, a nightclub in Goa’s Arpora village, when it was hosting a Bollywood dance party. As many as 50 people were injured in the incident.
The two brothers fled the country hours after the incident and flew to Thailand. They were later deported back to India on December 17 and are currently in the custody of the Goa police.
