PANAJI: According to a report in Goa newspaper Herald, the Verna Police have booked Congress leader Olencio Simoes for allegedly assaulting Cortalim Block Congress President Peter D’Souza.
According to the complaint, the incident took place during a meeting after D’Souza questioned Simoes over organising a block committee meeting without following established party protocol, the Herald report said.
The disagreement reportedly escalated, leading to the alleged assault.
Police said a case has been registered based on the complaint and statements recorded so far. Further investigation into the matter is currently underway to ascertain the sequence of events and fix responsibility.
Sources said tensions have been simmering for some time now between the two leaders who are said to belong to different camps or lobbies within the Goa unit of the Congress. Goa Congress President Amit Patkar or any senior Congress leader has not yet commented on the issue.
