MUMBAI: The Samajwadi Party (SP) which is fighting the BMC polls solo, has released its first list of candidates for the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. The party also officially kicked off its political campaign in the MMR region after announcing its list of candidates.

The party’s Maharashtra president, Abu Azmi, announced the first list comprising 21 candidates who will contest the civic polls across various wards in Mumbai.

Earlier, Azmi had made it clear that the Party would contest the BMC elections independently, without entering into any alliance. Though there were some initial talks at joining an alliance, the party decided to go on its own steam.

The list, issued by the party’s Mumbai–Maharashtra unit, includes aspirants from multiple wards and marks the formal start of the Samajwadi Party’s campaign for the high-stakes civic elections in the country’s financial capital.

Polls will be held on January 15 for 227 wards and the results will be announced on 16 Jan.

The party said in a public statement, “As per the instructions of Samajwadi Party Mumbai Maharashtra State President Abu Asim Azmi, the first list of candidates contesting the upcoming Mumbai Municipal Corporation elections has been announced today (Saturday). We will field our representatives in all 227 constituencies in Mumbai, and the remaining lists will be announced soon.”

The party has nominated 21 candidates in its first list from wards across the city. These include areas such as Pydhonie, Zaveri Bazar, Byculla and Agripada, Sewri, Bhatia Nagar and Shanti Nagar near Wadala in the Island City; Govandi, Shivaji Nagar, Kamraj Nagar, Ramabai Nagar and Rafiq Nagar in the eastern suburbs; and Behrampada, Kalina, Andheri East and Bunder Pakhadi in the western suburbs.

In the 2017 BMC elections, the Samajwadi Party had won six seats in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s 227-member general body.
